‘Blacks And Blues’ found flautist Bobbi Humphrey teaming up with Larry Mizell for a groove-laden album that provided future sample-fodder for hip-hop. Brought up in Dallas, Texas, Humphrey was Author: Charles Waring.

Flutist Bobbi Humphrey found wide success with Blacks and Blues (), her breakout third album for Blue Note, working with the Mizell Brothers (who had recently hooked up with Donald Byrd to produce the trumpeter's landmark album Black Byrd) to create a jazz-funk classic for the ages featuring the standout track "Harlem River Drive."/5(86).

Bobbi Humphrey scored her biggest hit with her third album Blacks and Blues, an utterly delightful jazz-funk classic that helped make her a sensation at chiemenazoreplei.sieskapinplannexttizamoodspiwamenca.co it sounds a lot like Donald Byrd's post-Black Byrd output, it's no accident; brothers Larry and Fonce Mizell have their fingerprints all over the album, and as on their work with Byrd, Larry handles all the 9/

Mar 01,  · The album was such a hit that Bobbi’s next album is connected to, but improves, the cover design with splashes of blue. The music. Bobbi Humphrey identified the Mizell sound as funk but, with a couple of exceptions, Blacks and Blues sounds nothing like taut “Bam!” James Brown funk.

Lee Morgan brought flutist Bobbi Humphrey to Blue Note in '71, but it wasn't until her 3rd LP, Blacks & Blues () that things began to click. The album (her 1st collaboration with arranger/producer Larry Mizell) has become an urban classic with tunes like "Harlem River Drive," "Chicago Damn," "Jasper Country Man" and the title tune/5(59).
